Feneo - Window Configurator

Feneo is a custom window configurator built for a carpenter/joiner. It replaces a legacy Excel file previously used to price and draw windows, with a web tool that lets users visually draw a project, price it and export it as a PDF.

Context

Objectives

• Replace a legacy Excel file, used to price and draw custom windows, with a dedicated web tool.
• Allow a window to be drawn visually, sashes, glazing bars, crossbars and dimensions, instead of being described in a spreadsheet.
• Centralise project management by company and by user, with PDF export ready to send to the client.

My role

• Full-stack Development: solo design and development of the entire application, from the business logic inherited from the Excel file to the interactive drawing interface.

Process

Research & Inspiration

• In-depth analysis of the existing Excel file to extract the calculation and sizing rules to faithfully reproduce in the application.

Feature Definition

• Interactive window drawing, with dimension and interaction options, replacing the tabular description from the Excel file.
• Project management by company: creation, saving, loading and duplication, with a safeguard against losing unsaved changes.
• Admin panel and access rights management by company and by user.
• PDF export and printing of the generated technical sheets.
• PWA installation for simplified use on site.

Development

• Built with Next.js (App Router), React and TypeScript, Supabase for authentication and database, Zustand for state management.
• Interactive drawing built with @dnd-kit for drag-and-drop interactions.
• PDF generation via jsPDF and html-to-image to convert the drawn plans into exportable documents.
• Form validation with React Hook Form and Zod.

Conclusion

Challenges

• Faithfully reproducing, in a visual interface, calculation and sizing rules originally designed for a spreadsheet.
• Iterating on the interactive window drawing over successive cycles until it matched real-world use, with late adjustments based on concrete feedback from the carpenter.
• Structuring access rights and multi-company management without overly complicating the data model.

Results & Learnings

• Functional end-to-end tool allowing a window project to be drawn, priced and exported, replacing the original Excel file.
• Implementation of a complete architecture, authentication, database and access rights, suited to multi-company use.
• Skill development in building interactive drawing interfaces and generating PDF documents client-side.
